چکیده

The paper provides empirical evidence that strategic complementarities among investors generate fragility in financial markets. Analyzing mutual fund data, we find that, consistent with a theoretical model, funds with illiquid assets (where complementarities are stronger) exhibit stronger sensitivity of outflows to bad past performance than funds with liquid assets. We also find that this pattern disappears in funds where the shareholder base is composed mostly of large investors. We present further evidence that these results are not attributable to alternative explanations based on the informativeness of past performance or on clientele effects. We analyze the implications for funds’ performance and policies. & 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The sharp distinction drawn between firms rated narrowly above (BBB–) and below (BB+) the investment-grade cutoff provides variation in debt financing availability unrelated to firm fundamentals. Individual investor mutual fund flows

Second, individuals pay attention to investment costs as redemption decisions are sensitive to both exp...

Are Mutual Funds Doomed to Underperform? Evidence from Managerial Turnover and Fund Flows

We empirically investigate the impact of fund flows and managerial turnover on the investment performance of active equity mutual funds. Fund flows have been suggested by Berk and Green (2004) as mechanism that prevents performance persistence. We propose managerial turnover as an alternative explanation. One the one hand, withdrawing money from loser funds and sacking bad fund managers are mea...

That study ended with a discussion of the role that momentum investing by mu...
